Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended on it

Chris Voss

The bar next to each date shows how long ago it was said: 6d is days, 4yr is years.

Hands down, this book has made me 10s of thousands of dollars. A single sentence I learned from this book has saved multiple major deals for me. Negotiating in today's world is a different game and there's a constant power struggle between sides. The author of this book was a hostage negotiator, where saving half the hostages is not a success. I'm still learning to apply his concepts, but the ones I have already make this book priceless. None of the other tactics of the books on this list in sales has had the impact this one has.

That little bar

It says how long ago something was said, so you can tell last month from 2014 without doing the arithmetic. Full and green is recent; it drains and cools as the date gets older, and empties completely at about 6 years.

A striped bar means the date itself is an estimate — the source did not carry an exact one. An entry with no date at all gets no bar.
